During the Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya, which saw positivity rates of up to 40%, remote counties such as Marsabit were especially heavily hit due to generally low vaccination availability, misinformation, sub-optimal health equipment and lack of urgent Personal Protection Equipment such as masks. This resulted in a rapid rise of untreated cases and Covid-19 related deaths.
Thanks to a generous personal donation of a Swiss donor of much needed surgical 3ply masks, Malteser International, in cooperation with the local NGO PACIDA (Pastoralist Community Initiative & Development), was able to distribute 130,000 of the 610,000 masks for Kenya within Marsabit and to the hard hit Kalacha referral hospital in the Chalbi desert region. The masks were provided to healthcare workers, as well as to patients and clients who visited the hospital for treatment of various ailments, including Covid-19. Malteser International continues to conduct health education on prevention of COVID-19 through radio, posters and community meetings.
As always, the needs that are even more affected by an on-going drought, far outweigh the response. We therefore appeal for donations to save the lives of the people during the Coronavirus pandemic. This will also help us to provide the necessary support till vaccination numbers improve.
Donations for the work which is supported by the Embassy of the Order to the Republic of Kenya are welcome to our account:
